The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education. ~Albert EinsteinThere’s a tuition teacher who hypes about how good he is at forecasting exam questions. In fact, he advertises his expertise in his pamphlets.
Man, he totally gets on my nerves! He calls himself a teacher? Bah, he’d be better off being a soothsayer in the Temple of Goddess of Mercy! I really don’t understand why there are so many gullible individuals flocking to his tuition centres and seminars. Does the world ever get short of idiots? But, why don’t I see people rushing to my house to worship me instead?
Tuition has become so widespread nowadays. I’m not against the idea of going for tuitions but when people start attending tuitions just because it’s a trend, you know it’s getting unhealthy alright. Without any authority regulating the operation of tuition centres, it has become a thriving trade as lucrative as selling caskets.
When I asked some of my friends why they go for tuitions, one of them gave me an odd look as if I was asking an obvious question like, “Why do you eat?” Then, there was an “I don’t know” and a “because my parents want me to”. For God’s sake, these people just never sit down and really think, do they? And, I suppose, that’s why they need to attend tuition classes.
Thinking back, it was foolish of me to dutifully go for maths tuition classes despite being confident in the subject. I’ve always wanted to stop but I lingered on longer than I should have just because my crush was there, notwithstanding the fact that my teachers in school are much better than the balding old chap who is irritatingly business-minded.
I can’t help but to admire and envy Finns for their excellent system of education. Finnish, who rank top in the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), “spend an average of just 30 hours per week on schoolwork, including homework”. (Source: Top of the Class, Reader’s Digest, September 2005) On the other hand, Koreans, who rank just behind Finland, spend 50 hours a week instead. Too bad Malaysia didn’t participate in the assessment or we’d have the chance to make comparisons.
In a pioneer project in Poikkilaakso Primary School, students are given lenient supervision. Each one is allowed to go on his own pace and learn according to his own style. We tried this alright, but too bad it was a futile effort. It is a great idea indeed but I doubt it will ever get off in Malaysia.
What I like the most is, in Finland, “standardised testing is shunned”. I quote from Reader’s Digest: ”Many countries believe that by emphasising testing their education will get better… But we believe the other way around. Too much testing makes you start teaching for the exams. But many aspects of learning can’t be measured that way.”
Whoa! They definitely hit the nail on its head. It really annoys me when some teachers answer, “Don’t worry. That won’t be tested,” in reply to a question. I mean, that’s definitely not the way to learn. Studying for the sake of exams? No way! That’s exactly how you breed non-thinking entities who do nothing good for the society.
Sigh. I say, we do have a lot to learn from Finns!
And, oh yeah! As for the soothsayer-cum-tuition-teacher, may Socrates’ ghost haunt him forever!

haha...i like this one!!
tuition sucks...
I have been living without tuition for 2 yrs and i still got into uni
ppl should just drop the idea of tuition and just let teachers teach better
On the other hand, our spm and stpm is actually good enough on what you learn and not the results.... :p
Bravo! Good! Excellent!
I like ur view. I fully agree wif u.
"Why do you eat?", I really look down on tis kind of people.
Tuition is not a trend. The purpose of tuition is not like tat.
Actually, i tuition for all 5 subjects in STPM.
But it does not mean tat i go tuition coz of trend.
Or go tuition to show tat i'm hardworking.
I go tuition coz i feel tat i really need it.
I'm not satisfied with the way teached in school.
Very brief... Incomplete... Poor teaching method... Not profesional... Not dedicated... and more and more...
Well, i'm so happy tat i manage to found some really good and worth-going tuitions.
They really teach the students wif dedicate, not like commercialise their tuition centre.
If really can, i really hope tat i can just choose to go tuition without going to school to attend some useless lessons.
Haha, i think i talk too much at here. Hehe....
i go for PA,maths and physics tuition
reasons below:
PA-you know puan Ong? She's marks STPM paper. Our school teacher teaches wrong stuff, and never believes what Puan Ong says about STPM general paper.
Maths- in school its way too fast for me to catch up,plus it is incomplete! the teacher uses fajar bakti text book only.
Physics- the teacher in the school is good, but only for advanced students. Since I'm an idiot, I go for tuition, where i won't doze off while the teacher is teaching. Plus it is a small class and i think the tutor's notes are very organised.
Tuition saved me a lot of time :P
Okay! Everyone, vote with your legs: Tuition sux! Hahahah!
June> Isn't pn ong teaching in ur school?
yay! i've been surviving without tuition for almost 1 year now! it's so nice that we've so much more free time to erm, waste now..hehe..
however, not everyone tat goes to tuition goes juz becoz their parents want to or becoz everyone goes..last year, i went to tuition becoz I wanted too and anyway, some of the teachers in my sch was totally lousy compared to my ex-tuition teachers...
whatever. Tuition-you can't live with it, you can't live without it.
i need tuition cuz i dun hv bio class in sch n i'm not motivated enuf to study on my own :P
discipline is apparently what you lack of. u know that through and through. ;P
puan ong is teaching in my school, but she's not teaching me.
plus our teacher just wont listen to her, about how do we score in stpm general paper.
even if she is teaching me in school next year,i'll still go there, cuz there aint the same notes
plus at school she'll be using the book and at tuition she'll be giving us notes and....u noe.....make us score ;-)
right... tuition is just wat u dun need and it should not be used....
wat we need is better teachers in school...
I doubt that u will need tuition when u get into uni??>
june> do you know mrs sim from our school who teaches chem? she doesn't allow her students to go to her tuition.
cwtan> hey, you're right, for once! form six is a transition to uni. not having tuition in form six is a way of adapting to uni life and not to say, to have more time for other great things in life!
ii tot mrs sim aactually gives chem tuition...
cw>>right....schools need better teachers, and alsoo a better educatiooon system.
for my physsics i study twice, once aaat tuition, once at home myself.
i rarelyy listen to the teacher in school cuz.....ummm....the process of unlearning is really horrible.
and inn my familly saya akan dipandang rendah if i dun score...
(paiseh,school's keyboard cacat!)
P.S.:; i dun need tuitioon innn uni,i m able to study mysellf...i go too tuition for extra notes.
Haha, if the schools can change the education system into the better one, then i wont go tuition.
If someone can make those tuition teachers teach us in school, then i won't go other tuition liao.
If Mrs Sim got teach me in school, i wont go to other tuition too. She is really good.
I think when i go uni, without tuition i also can handle, coz form 6 d provide me a very good foundation.
Haha, tat's my view.
seriously, our education system is fine. The syllabus is actually quite good at some places compared to the current British GCSE (SPM) system. I just dun agree with the grading
2ndly, the school is a place for you to learn and not sleep or complain about the teacher, some people actually go and say, I got tuition, why do I need to go to school? which makes the whole education system collapse. Also, no one asks thew teacher in school if they have a problem, which makes it more of a one way system
School is also a good place to socialise and you may make friends for life here as well.
Trust me, you'll waste time by taking tuition if you dont need it and you will lose precious study time over it.
june>> yes. but "she doesn't allow her students to go to her tuition." -- i mean students that she teaches in sch.
i hate to say it, but, see I told you so! u're infecting keyboards with kss! r u going to ask the hm to pay up for that? lol
"and inn my familly saya akan dipandang rendah if i dun score" -- hmm, that's not good... now i understand how u get kss. it's d pressure, i guess...
phyee>> heheh. kiat eng complained that u din want to copy ah beng's notes cos u said sim's are always the best!
Haha, not like tat lah.....
But i really find tat mrs sim's note is better.
Ah beng's note is too short n too brief, not suitable for me. Copy also wast my time. Sometimes even make me confuse bout all those facts, especially those organic chem.
But now i got copy his note lah. Cun be too obvious tat i dun support his note mah. But i just copy n put aside. I still prefer sim's note.
I think different ppl got different view on tuition. I feel tat my tuition teachers can provide me better education, so i prefer go tuition.
Listen clearly, i go tuition coz i feel tat my TUITION TEACHERS is good. Not TUITION is good.
I dun think tuition got waste my time. It gives me chance to revise my lesson again. If got to those poor lesson in school baru is wasting ur time.
For example, if a lecturer or a teacher come in just blaaaa those notes, u sure think of study urself is better.
So, it's just different view from different ppl.
