On the second day, we set off to Owakudani (大涌谷), one of the peaks in Hakone (箱根). Took a train (電車, densha), then a funnicular cable car and finally, the ropeway to get to the peak.
The mountain is the main source of hotspring. Water from here is sent to the onsen resorts in Hakone by means of pipes. From the ropeway, these hotsprings could be seen emitting steam. The air stank like rotten egg.
Owakudani (大涌谷) peak.
The hotspring is yellowish in colour due to the high content of sulphur.
Eggs are boiled in the hotsprings for about 10 to 15 minutes. Due to chemical reaction, the shell of the eggs turns black.
Steam is emitted from the ground, indicating sources of underground hotsprings.
The ropeway station.
A view of Hakone's mountains. The sky was cloudy so Fujisan couldn't be seen from the peak.
